Perhaps I have been living in a bubble, but it has only recently come to my attention about the 911 conspiracy theories abounding on the internet and in the media. The basic premise is that the attacks on 911 where planned and executed by the United States to manipulate our economy and provide a reason to promote the war on terror.
The whole concept is disturbing. If there is any truth to it I want to know what it is. If there is not, what kind of people are so cruel and deceptive as to fabricate such a hoax?
There are several takes on this and a variety of theories that get many groups of people wondering: those who oppose and distrust our government, those who have a high regard for information integrity and want to know the truth, Christians who want to be alert to the plans of Antichrist. As far as the latter, I believe that is another issue that is sometimes confused with any such 9/11 conspiracy and if Christians are interested in the end times there are other topics to explore in that area.
But what is one to do when presented with “evidence” that contradicts the facts that we have already come to believe? No one wants to be duped, especially by their own government. So we look into these things. Sometimes we start believing the creative evidence that we read and see with our own eyes. God gave us a mind to think critically, to analyze the information that is before us. He also gave us a spirit with which to discern. He tells us to test the spirits ( 1 John 4:1-6 ) and to bring every imagination to the obedience of Christ ( 2 Corinthians 10:5).
This propoganda has been mainly distributed through documentaries produced by a few sinical young men in their early twenties from Loose Change and made available on the web. These videos have become extremely popular and they are making a profit from their efforts. Rosie O’Donnell has even come on board, why not? it already fits her anti-Bush agenda.
Why people are interested in distorting the truth of this nature is beyond me. The fruit of this is only hurtful and fosters distrust. It shifts our focus from supporting our government and diverts it away from our true enemy. Deceit and doubt are some of the oldest tricks in the Book and only serve to tear down. Do I believe that our government is above reproach and always handles things as it should. I do not. I do not think we were prepared for a situation like this as such had never before happened and think it was a noble decision to move in the direction that it did in the relentless pursuit of our enemies. To tear down the authority of our government only thwarts our own security.
The idea that our government inflicted this on us with purpose is ludicrous. I wonder, has anyone considered that Osama bin Laden rather than our government may be manipulating and propigating these theories to undermine our government? But then again, perhaps he wouldn’t need to. Have you ever seen Stephen King’s movie “Needful Things”? The evil one in this story manipulates people into believing what they want to, feeding their anger and hate. I think I’ve said as much as I will on that.
Here are some of the basic myths that are being propigated. This is only the short version. Below I will include links for you to evaluate these claims further.
Myth: Osama bin Laden was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks and the U.S. Government is behind the events of that tragic day.
Truth: Osama bin Laden claimed and confirmed responsibility for the attacks on several occasions since 2001 including an audiotape dated May 23, 2006 Osama bin Laden stated, “I was responsible for entrusting the 19 brothers – Allah have mercy upon them – with those raids ….” Bin Laden added, “the participants in September 11th were two groups: pilots and support teams for each pilot in order to control the aircraft.”
Myth: The World Trade Center buildings were rigged by the U.S. Government with explosives and the plane crashes were just a guise to conceal these acts.
Truth: The WTC buildings collapsed as a result of the plane crashes and their devasting impact on their structures.
Civil engineer S. Shyam Sunder discusses how the WTC buildings collapsed (see link for 9/11 controversy theories).
Myth: The Pentagon was not hit by an airplane, but a missile.
Truth: There is substantial evidence for the crash of Flight 77, a Boeing 757, at the Pentagon including wreckage, flight personnel clothing, bodies of the deceased. Phone calls were also made from this flight to loved ones prior to the crash.
Myth: Flight 93 never crashed in Shanksville, PA, that no debris or human DNA was ever found there.
Truth: There was plenty of forensic evidence of this plane crash discovered. 95% of the plane debris was recovered ass well as positive ID on all 44 passengers on board.
Myth: Flight 93 never crashed in Shanksville, PA, that the plane stopped in Cleveland, OH and 200 passengers were “disposed” of.
The cockpit voice recorder from flight 93 was recovered revealing that passengers were on board the plane and they revolted against the hijackers, causing it’s crash. Further, the U.S. Military did not learn of the crash until 4 mins. after the event.
Myth: That flight 93 passengers could not make phone calls from the plane, and they were fabricated.
Truth: Several passengers, including flight personnel, made phone calls from either Airphones or cellphones and had intimate conversations with loved ones. These were two way conversations and not prerecorded statements fabricated by the government. In addition, background noises and talking was heard as events took place during the hijacking crisis. Phone calls were also made from Flight 77.
